Since May 1, 2026, Chinese buyers can import Kenyan black tea to China duty-free. Kenyan black tea (red tea, or 红茶 hongcha, as it is called in China) previously faced import duties of up to 15%.

That changes the math for every container you buy, and makes it one of the most affordable, high-quality bases available to the Chinese beverage industry.

Getting the price right is only the first step. You also have to get the product through the port without issues.

H.E. Kithure Kindiki, Deputy President of Kenya, and H.E. Han Zheng, Vice President of China, flagging off the first consignment of duty-free shipments to China in Nairobi on March 23, 2026. This milestone marked the formal start of shipments under the zero-tariff trade agreement between the two nations.

Documents and Compliance When You Import Kenyan Black Tea to China

Many importers focus only on tea quality and forget to clarify the paperwork. To receive the 0% rate, your shipment needs an Early Harvest Certificate of Origin, meaning a certificate of origin issued under the Early Harvest Agreement, the arrangement under which Kenyan exports qualify for zero tariffs.

Kenyan tea suppliers must be registered with GACC before shipping to China.. We are GACC-registered, and our registration number appears on the relevant shipping documents.

Every batch is tested in Kenya before loading by accredited independent laboratories, against China's national food safety standards: GB 2763 for pesticide residues and GB 2762 for contaminants, including heavy metals. This helps you avoid rejections or delays in Shanghai or Ningbo.

Documents included with every shipment to your port.

  • Certificate of Origin (COO): The key to your 0% tariff.

  • Phytosanitary Certificate: Proves the tea meets China's health standards.

  • Bill of Lading (BL): Your proof of ownership.

  • Packing List: Detailed breakdown of tea grades and weights.

  • Commercial Invoice: Matches all HS codes for smooth valuation.

Why Kenyan Black Tea in China Works for Milk Tea: The "Briskness" Advantage

Kenyan black tea (red tea, as it is commonly called in China) has a specific strength we call briskness. It can taste “sharp” if drunk like traditional green tea, but this strength is exactly what China's “new-style” milk tea and fruit tea markets need.

When you add fresh milk or heavy creamers, subtle tea flavours often disappear. Many Kenyan red teas have the “bite” to cut through the dairy. This keeps the tea flavour front and centre and provides the deep red colour consumers expect.

Choosing Kenyan Black Tea (Red Tea 红茶) Grades to Import

Choosing the right tea depends on your final product. See our guide to Kenyan Tea Grades for the full range.

High-speed beverage lines

Our high-volume export. The smaller size infuses fast and strong

  • PD (Pekoe Dust) and D1 (Dust 1)

  • PF, BMF, and Fannings

RTD (Ready-to-Drink) bottled tea

Secondary grades that keep costs as low as possible

  • Orthodox Tea

Smooth blends without the “bite” of CTC

Thicker mouthfeel and a sweeter, honey-like finish. Processed as whole or large broken leaves, so it lacks sharp astringency and doesn’t need blending to stay smooth

Working With a Kenyan Black Tea Supplier: From Sample to Port

The zero-tariff benefit is a great starting point, but the real value is a reliable, repeatable supply chain. We start with a clear understanding of your specific production needs.

Once we identify the right tea profile, whether a punchy PF1 for a milk tea base or a thick, smooth Orthodox leaf, we move straight to sample dispatch for your internal review. Our team manages the full cycle from there: custom packing to your specifications, laboratory testing by accredited firms against Chinese food safety standards, and the final logistics push to your port of choice.

We prepare the shipping and customs documents for your shipment, including the Early Harvest Certificate of Origin, so the 0% tariff applies when your container arrives. This lets you focus on distribution in China while we manage the origin side.
